What is Linux?
You'll see a lot on this web site about Linux or, more correctly called, GNU/Linux. You may be wondering, what can Linux do for my organization?
First, a bit of a disclaimer: Spartacus Systems believes in using the right tool to solve a problem. While in many circumstances we do advocate Linux, we also implement solutions based on Microsoft Windows, various Unix operating systems, Apple Macintosh, and more.
Linux is a "kernel", the guts or core component of an operating system. To be useful, Linux is combined with other GNU software to form a complete GNU/Linux operating system. GNU/Linux systems feature everything you'd expect in a modern operating system and are directly comparable to the Microsoft Windows or the Apple Macintosh operating systems.
Many companies sell GNU/Linux systems and combine this with hundreds of different free software packages and applications. These combinations are called "Linux distributions." In a typical Linux distribution you'll get the basic GNU/Linux operating system, utility programs and tools, full-blown office suites with word processors and spreadsheets (etc.), along with games, web servers, file servers, and literally hundreds of other programs and applications.
The key to remember here is that all this is based on free software. So while companies may combine the above-mentioned Linux distributions with technical support and sell this as a package, the software is also freely and legally available for download via the Internet.
It doesn't matter if you're a home-based business, a small business, a mid-sized or large business, a non-profit organization, or an educational institution, GNU/Linux has unique qualities which we're sure you will find attractive.
